For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and “The worker deserves his wages.” (1 Timothy 5:18 NIV)
My kids and I play this game where they climb on me as I am laying down. Then all of a sudden I say in a scary voice “You can’t keep the monster down!”. As I am lifting them off the ground with my arms and legs they laugh so loud. You are probably thinking of course I would choose passage because I am a pastor. Preaching and teaching is a big part of my job portfolio, but getting paid is not the heart of this passage. Respect is, and I have chosen as a Christ follower never to let my paycheck define me. The respect is from a God who loves me and my friends so much that His son pays the price for our salvation.
At the same time I am reminded that life and people can try to muzzle the ministry that God has me serving. Just like the game I play with my kids may I respond with not staying down. May I live my life in such a way that doesn’t muzzle God’s work through his followers.
Lord I pray that I would respond by speaking through the muzzle that life can try and put on me. May I speak truth to my own heart and the hearts of the people I lead. Bless my bride today and my kids. May I never muzzle their dreams.
