For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God’s power. (1 Corinthians 4:20 NLT)
To put this truth in an American proverb, “actions speak louder than words” or “the proof is in the pudding.” My favorite of all time is “Don’t try and write a check with your mouth that your booty can’t cash”. For anyone under the age of twenty-five, before plastic cards that communicated to stores how much is in our bank account, there were these books of paper that have your account info on and to pay you just have to write the amount on that check and you purchased the item you desire. That was a hard lesson my the bank had to teach me. Sheldon there has to be $20 in the account for you to write a check for twenty dollars. I did learn quick when a twenty dollar check would cost me $55 with late fees!!!
In the same way Paul is reminding us that words are good. Speaking the gospel in truth and love is always beneficial to you and the people you are trying to reach with the gospel. At the same time there is an energy, a force that needs to empower the words we are using. He is not saying don’t talk. He is challenging us to make sure our minds and hearts a bent towards sharing and living our faith out with God’s power.
I desire to live by God’s power. I speak and lead for a living as a pastor. It is my joy! May I learn how to depend on Gods power and be in tune with The Lord wants to accomplish. For I will never have a account full of God’s power that I have earned. “There is no charge for awesomeness” (Po, The Kung Fu Panda)! At the same time may my conviction, passion and resolve be communicated as a faith that can and must be followed! Would people feel Gods kingdom, power, awesomeness of God in there hearts every time they here me speak or watch my life. I will probably never hear, “Sheldon when I heard you speak it was your intelligent verbiage and unfathomable witty thought processes that caused me to give my life to The Lord”. I am going to continue to work on a gift that I believe Christ has given me. The ability to enjoy talking in front of people for twenty minutes straight and make some sense most of the time. Will I always remember it is the power of God that makes the difference.
Lord as you have reminded me it is by your power, people and the church advances, would you speak deep to the hearts of whoever has taken the time to read this and the people of HOPE. Show us what to say lead us to do what you want done.
